Rhyolite

This reddish colored volcanic rock, often referred to as porphyry, is the base for the soil type in three of Gut Hermannsberg’s 7 terroirs or VDP Grosse Lagen / “Grand Crus”, the Bastei, Rotenberg and Rossel Monopol. Rhyolite is rich in quartz and weathers slowly because it is so hard.
